Shine began in 1998 and grew out of the vibrant and diverse Scottish music scene. The three members Corrina Hewat,(Voice/Electro harp), Mary Macmaster, (Voice/Electro harp), and Alyth McCormack, (Voice), had previously performed together in other projects.

Corrina commissioned by Celtic Connections to compose a piece for their New voices series, recommended Alyth to sing in the resulting 'Making the connection'. The following year, the 3 of them worked together in Andy Thorburn's suite for 12 voices, 'Tuagh gu Deas' and at a second performance of this piece for the Bongo Club in Edinburgh, the three girls were asked to open the evening. Shine was born.

In 2000 Mary was asked by Ros Rigby of Folkworks to suggest an interesting and complementary opener for the first British tour of the Bulgarian Voice Choir, Angelite, and the work on creating Shine's distinctive harmonic, minimalist and melodic sound took off.
